About Michigan Dance Project
A DANCE COMPANY ON A MISSION...
Michigan Dance Project is committed to strengthening the dance community throughout Michigan. Founded in 2006 by director Kathy King, MDP operates as a non-profit contemporary dance company, and strives to offer a professional atmosphere for dancers to experience artistic and technical growth. By holding regular rehearsals, frequent and affordable classes, and unique performances, MDP is creating excitement about professional dance and the arts within our community.

Kathy founded Michigan Dance Project in 2006 while attending Wayne State University studying dance and public relations. She is a life-long dancer, spending time living and training in Memphis, Chicago, Los Angeles and Detroit. She has studied intensively at EDGE Performing Arts Center, Broadway Dance Center, and the Bates Dance Festival. Kathy began dancing professionally at a young age, touring with local music act Dave King Live and Detroit rap artist T-Baby. While in LA, Kathy was assistant to choreographer Joaquin Escamilla and performed in a variety of stage shows and small film works.
Currently, you can find Kathy teaching modern and jazz dance in the Department of Music & Dance at Eastern Michigan University, plus working as the assistant director at Michelle's Academy of Dance & Performing Arts Center in Brighton, MI. She also travels nationwide with in-studio conventions Artists-in-Training and Dance Rogue Intensive Workshops, and is a free-lance dance adjudicator.
ASSISTANT CREATIVE DIRECTOR
Michigan Dance Project is thrilled to welcome Travis to the company this season! Born in Puerto Rico and moving to Michigan at a young age, Travis began dancing in his early years at Troy Dance Studio. In 2009, he continued his training studying dance and theatre at Oakland University. He has also spent time studying at EDGE Performing Arts Center, Millennium Dance Complex, and Broadway Dance Center. He has performed professionally throughout Michigan for several years with the Sensuality Latin Dance Show. His credits also include The Wannabe's TV Show, Miley Cyrus ensemble dancer, Motor City Movement, Michael Jackson Tribute, and the Detroit Salsa Congress.
Now you can find Travis studying theatre at Michigan State University and teaching hip hop at Spartan Dance Center in East Lansing, American Dance Academy in South Lyon, and Michelle's Academy of Dance in Brighton.
